KING OF THAILAND

To some foreigners unfamiliar with Thailand, the reigning King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or King Rama IX of the Chakri Dynasty, might be regarded as another constitutional king in a democratic country, or the longest- reigning monarch in the Thai history and in the world. But to the Thais, His Majesty is the pride of the nation. In our hearts it is the undeniable realization that we have a great king who has always ruled with righteousness, benevolence, and capability. He has reigned for 6 decades and has become the symbol of the Thai nation, and of the country’s continuity and stability.
Grandson of King Rama V, and son of Prince Mahidol of Songkla and Princess Mother Srisangwan, King Bhumibol was born on December 5, 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. , and educated in Lausanne, Switzerland, in the field of political science and law. He succeeded to the throne on June 9, 1946. The royal marriage between the King and Queen Sirikit took place on April 28, 1950. In the same year he was crowned, on May 5. The royal couple have 4 children: Princess Ubolrattana, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, Crown Princess Sirindhorn, and Princess Chulabhorn. The year 2010 marks His Majesty’s 60th years on the throne. He is now 83 years old.
Back in 1950 when the king was crowned, his Coronation Pledge was: “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” Throughout his long and fruitful reign, he has proved, to the Thais and to international communities, that he has always kept his words. He, indeed, has done more than the required royal duties and responsibilities. His lifelong good works have exemplified and embodied the never-ending royal tasks, the ultimate objectives of which being always for the benefits of the people as a whole. His works are aimed at alleviating poverty, ignorance, suffering, disease, and leading to the improvement of the standards of living and the quality of life of the people, on a nationwide basis. All is for the land and for his people.

These are not just what he is known for among the Thais. The King is truly all these.
That he is a great king… That he reigns with the righteousness, love, compassion, sacrifice, diligence, perseverance, wisdom, responsibility, knowledge and understanding, while adhering to the virtue of a good Buddhist…is evident and genuine, as manifested in his astounding range of public activities, from the day of enthronement to today. This explains why he commands the highest reverence, profound appreciation, and great affection from the Thai people. His presence anywhere and in the remotest and most inaccessible parts of the country: North, East, West, Central Plains, always brings joy, and hope. This hope is represented in a surprisingly great number of the royal development projects he has undertaken or initiated.
Amazingly and tirelessly over the long years the King has been engaging himself in helping the poor, the needy, the underprivileged, the uneducated, and the sick. His beneficial works challenge any man’s imagination of how a monarch head of state could rule and achieve so much as a teacher, a writer, a religious devotee, a humanist, a developer, an agriculturalist, a naturalist, an engineer, an inventor, a nature conservationist, a musician, a sportsman. The list could go on.
On the auspicious occasions of the celebrations of His Majesty’s 60th Coronation Anniversary and the 83th Birthday Anniversary, Chulabhorn Graduate Institute, being a higher scientific educational institute, would like to pledge our loyalty and to humbly honour our great king by emphasizing his roles and achievements in the areas of human resource development, science and technology.
Thus, accordingly we would like to present his vision, concepts and work done regarding human resource, science and technology particularly agriculture, water resource, environment, health and hygiene, respectively.
We will be running a monthly series on the Royal Development Projects: from June 2010 to May 2011.
